Living With Diabetes

Build Good Habits That Will Change Your Life.

Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. When you consume food, your body releases glucose into your blood. The hormone insulin then moves sugar from the blood into your cells to be stored or used for energy. Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body becomes resistant to insulin, and sugar builds up in your blood. Your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t effectively use the insulin it does make. The resulting high blood sugar can damage organs throughout your body and lead to a number of other health complications, such as heart disease, nerve damage and vision loss. Lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise and weight play a big role in the risk of developing diabetes. Healthy eating is a core part of managing diabetes, and in some cases a change of diet can be enough to control the disease.
